How to Make Daily Life Feel More Sacred
Make every moment of the day a sacred prayer, even the mundane! That is what we are here for! But why is it so difficult for every moment to be magic? Why can’t every moment be beautiful and so filled with love and light?
I would like to share with you some of my own rituals that have helped me remember how to make daily life feel more sacred, such as waking up in the morning and greeting the sun, greeting the earth, greeting Pachamama, greeting myself, and just being like, "Wow, I'm here, this is awesome." Have a moment when you wake up to just be in sacredness. Perhaps spend some time with your mesa, spend time with your altar, in prayer, drink your hot tea or hot beverage, and just enjoy the moment. When you start each day off like that, you bring that sacred energy forward throughout your day, and ultimately, you transform your life.
I work at a tech company as a tech support, so I understand if it seems challenging to try to bring the sacred into your workday. Let us be honest, sometimes it really is difficult to be at work and see the divine in everyone we work with! We cannot seem to get away from the corporate structures; they are just too prevalent. So how do we go into those places and still hold our prayer, hold ourselves, hold the divine, and not let our light be taken away? How do we make even this part of ourselves sacred?
I have a little altar at work to ground me in and bring me back. I take walks. We happen to have a beautiful waterfall trail behind my work. I will go out back there every day for 30 minutes and just be with the trees, be with the waters, be with the birds, and remind myself, for instance, "Yeah, yeah, I'm a part of this. I'm a part of this." In the tech world where we are consumed by the mind and may have a lot of out-of-body experiences, it is important to go back into nature and ground back into ourselves, reminding ourselves once again that we can make every moment sacred, because it is true.
In regard to work relationships, and maybe even with friends, family, and loved ones, we must treat every moment we have with them as sacred, too, rather than saying things like, “I don't want to go see this person.” Maybe we do not mind meeting with others, but we still do not treat them like they are something special. When you start to really look at life and define everything and everyone as sacred, as gifts that the universe has brought to you, you understand that they are in your life for a reason. Maybe you have had bad or challenging relationships — I am sorry for that if you have. I do not want to bypass any emotions that are coming up with that. But we have to remember the sacredness that happens within the relationships the universe brings into our lives by allowing ourselves to simply feel just how it is to be with these people, and being grateful.
Prayer has dramatically changed how I interact with people. I am much more loving and kind, and no longer anxious or afraid to be who I am. Prayer allows me to be able to sit with the fears and see them as a sacred opportunity to free more of my true self. Is that not what we all want? The more we can be within the sacred, the more our true light shines and the more joy, love, and happiness we will see. I have seen it play out in my life and many other people's lives, where the more open they are to receiving the love, and the more they treat every moment as something sacred, the more the universe pours into them and the more they align with who they are. More blessings come into their life and more room is created for them to receive so much goodness.
Finding small things to be grateful for, such as giving thanks for a meal, brings us back to ourselves, brings us back to being, to nature, our divinity. When we see ourselves as part of something bigger, it takes the pressure off of ourselves to be the person to hold the whole world up. When we put ourselves in a place of service, and say, “Pachamama, I'm here. Please use me. I'm here to be of service. I'm here to love others,” watch what beautifully unfolds. The more willing you are to open up to this prayer, the more opportunity arises. One of my favorite quotes from the Bible reminds us that God will never give us more than we can handle, which sometimes does not feel true! But then we make it through, we’re a little bit stronger for it, and there are gifts and treasures that come along, too.
As we build our faith and trust, we develop more capacity to love and share our gifts as service. People come into our lives who are in need of these services, and it is a beautiful process of how the divine, pachamama, the universe, brings us to that place of sacredness. But we have to ask for it first. I always liked the analogy of making incense– where you have to get the herbs, the frankincense or myrrh, and grind them down to such a fine powder. That too is the soul journey. You have to be grinded down, made into something fine, something pure, something that can be molded and put together. And then through this process, you become malleable. Then, when you really sink into yourself, you become essence, you become this incense, you become this prayer.
